Birthday parties on a budget

We all know times are tight financially, for even the wealthiest of families. However that doesn’t mean you can’t give your child a birthday party they will remember for years to come – it’s just all about knowing where to splash out and where to cut back.

First of all, if you choose to have a themed party, you can find relevant graphics and decorations on the internet. Provided you have a printer, you can print these out for free before sticking them up all over the living room. Cheap fancy dress costumes mean your little one can feel like their hero for the day and if you have the time, it’s worthwhile scouring charity shops to find toys relating to their theme for guests to play with.

Secondly, when it comes to food and drink, you really don’t have to spend a fortune. Say for example you want to have a cake made specifically for the occasion. Sure, you could spend a few bob on this but compensate by making all the party food by hand. Sandwiches don’t have to cost the earth and a few cocktail sausages don’t either.

What’s more, as we’re all in the same boat, why not ask parents to bring a small contribution if they can? Why not get all of the parents involved and set up a scheme whereby you all do the same for each other, come each birthday party? This is a great way to bond and also to help each other out financially.

Next, don’t fret if you can’t afford lots and lots of presents. In fact, this might be just the right situation to explain to your little one the value of money. Tell them gently that as you are throwing them a wonderful birthday party, their present pile might be a little smaller this year. Once you tell them how much fun they will have with their pals, they will have forgotten all about that extra present they didn’t get.

Lastly, be creative with the entertainment. It doesn’t take a lot to keep a child engaged and with the internet offering thousands of birthday party game ideas, a bit of research could take away a lot of the hard work from you.
